Oh it's even worse and more complicated than THAT !
We see every object in the universe as it existed at a different time
in the past. That's because we don't see it until the light from it gets
here, and from anything outside our own solar system, that time is
very substantial.
-- We see the moon as it was 1.3 seconds ago.
-- When Mars is closest to us, we see it
as it was 14 minutes ago.
When Mars is farthest from us, we see it
as it was 22 minutes ago.
-- We see the sun as it was 8 minutes ago.
-- When Neptune is closest to us, we see it
as it was 4 hours ago.
-- We see Proxima Centauri, the nearest star outside
our solar system, as it was 4.3 years ago.
-- Polaris ... the North Star ... is located at a distance of about 375 light years
from us. So when you see the North Star tonight, you see it was it was
around the year 1740.
-- We see the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest galaxy outside
the Milky Way, as it was 2.5 million years ago.
-- We saw the gravity waves from the merger of two black holes
as they were 1.3 billion years ago.
The principle of the thing is mind-boggling. You don't see ANYTHING as it is
right now. You only see it when the light from it reaches you. Even, say, the
refrigerator standing 15 feet away from you across the kitchen ... you see it
as it was 0.000000015 second ago.
