Nationalist movement in Ottoman Empire resulted in the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

Turkish National Movement started during the last years of the Ottoman Empire. The empire was defeated in WWI and the victorious Allied forces occupied its capital, Constantinople (also known as Istanbul) and some of its territories. The Turkish National Movement rose against this occupation, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal (1881-1938).

The conflict derived in the so-called Turkish War of Independence that ended with the abolition of the Ottoman sultanate, in 1922, and with the declaration of independence of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Turkey was consituted as a democratic state, where power was held by its people who will be able to exercise it in the newly-created Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
