Plants use chemical toxins to protect themselves from herbivores. An example can be the presence of two kinds of White Clover plants in the US. One White Clover variant has a plain leaf, and the other has a stripe patterned leaf. The stripe patterned leaves have a toxin in them. The herbivores that eat White Clover leaves tend to avoid the White Clover plants with stripe patterned leaves.
