Kinetic energy is the energy that a body or object possesses because of motion. This is also the energy needed when accelarating the body to motion from its still position. The body or object maintains this energy unless there is a change in speed of motion. When there is a sudden stop from the moving body or object, inertia will be at play. This would mean that when a vehicle is moving at speeds, inertia will also be at play and might endanger the life of the people riding the vehicle. Thus the stopping distance calculated. The stopping distance revolves around the kinetic energy of the vehicle. Though there aren't much difference in stopping distance, real world cases would vary. Since kinetic energy is directly proportional to mass, then the tires are built to compensate this difference.
