Echoic Memory describes an ultra-short- term memory and it has to do with what we just hear. When we hear a sound, this sound is transmitted to the brain and it's stored in it for a period of four seconds. This happens even when you're not paying attention.
This explains why, sometimes, when you are concentrated in other things and someone says something to you, you would just say "what did you say?" but as soon as you finish saying it you answer the question because, somehow you realize that you do know what they just said (thanks to the echoic memory).
