The lower class join sects since sects emphasize that the rewards come in the next life, and that even though one may be lacking material comfort in the world they live in all will be better in the next life. In addition, sects emphasize the presence of a god active in their daily lives. This helps them to know that despite the material misery, God has not abandoned them.
