Describe the management of the Butler estate and slave conditions there. How did the plantation owner, the overseer, and the slaves relate to each other?
During slavery period the American society, based on the plantation economic model, was properly hierarchical, where the african slave, as a servant, and without civil rights, constituted the base of the economic pyramid. The overseer, usualy white man with based salary work, was in charge for monitoring and to ensure the production control. And the owner should keep the revenues in a competitive prices.
If they did something wrong, they were to be whipped or dealt with in another fashion. The slaves were watched by the overseer, who was employed by the owner.
