Ponyboy and Johnny had to disguise themselves because Johnny killed someone to save Ponyboy's life and they were on the run from the cops. Ponyboy loved his hair because it symbolized who he was and he was a Greaser.

The reason for the boy's disguise was in order to change their appearance.

In the story "The Outsiders", both Johnny and Ponny cut their hair. Also, Ponyboy used bleach on himself. The reason for this was to alter their appearances.

They feared that the residents of Windrixville may recognize them based on the images that were in the paper and report them to the police. Ponyboy was also glad about his hair since it gave him a Greaser look.
