The Southern Homestead Act of 1866 is a United States federal law enacted to break a cycle of debt during the Reconstruction following the American Civil War. Prior to this act, blacks and whites alike were having trouble buying land.

The homestead act was signed by the President of the United States in the year 1862 and under this act, Americans were granted 160 acres of the plot of Public land for the small price. This act was considered one of the major parts of the legislation and this act was the reason that led to the western expansion. This act also allowed people from all walks of life be it, slaves, immigrants or women to become landowners.  

In the year 1861, the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln made a speech and in that speech, he told people about the purpose of the government and that was related to the better living conditions to everyone as he wanted every citizen of the United States to have a fair chance to lead a comfortable life. This act was open to all the citizens of the United States and around 4 million homestead claims were made but only 1.6 million out of these 4 million were accepted.
