2Na + Cl2 ----> 2NaCl

Explanation:

A bond that is formed due to transfer of one or more number of electrons is known as an ionic bond.

For example, atomic number of sodium is 11 and its electronic distribution is 2, 8, 1. Atomic number of chlorine is 17 and its electronic distribution is 2, 8, 7.

Hence, in order to attain stability sodium will lose one valence electron and chlorine will gain one electron.

This transfer of electron will lead to the formation of an ionic bond between sodium and chlorine.

The reaction equation for this will be as follows.

       [tex]2Na(s) + Cl_{2}(g) \rightarrow 2NaCl(s)[/tex]

As the number of atoms on both reactant and product side of this reaction are equal. Hence, it is a balanced chemical reaction equation.
