Deepali was given two data sets, one without an outlier and one with an outlier.

Data without an outlier: 15, 19, 22, 26, 29
Data with an outlier: 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, 81

How is the mean affected by an outlier?

Respuesta :

To find how the mean is affected by an outlier, we can find the means for both of the data sets. We can find a mean by adding all of the quantities together and then dividing by how many there are. But, instead since we see that the outlier is much larger, we know that it would make the data set's mean much larger, since by adding a number that is much greater than the rest, the dividing will create an even larger number.

The mean with outlier will become higher.

What is Mean ?

Mean is the average of the given numbers and is calculated by dividing the sum of given numbers by the total number of numbers.

Mean [tex]=\frac{Sum\ of\ all\ numbers}{Total\ numbers}[/tex]

We have,

Data without an outlier [tex]: 15, 19, 22, 26, 29[/tex]

Data with an outlier [tex]: 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, 81[/tex]

So, Mean of Data without an outlier [tex];[/tex]

Mean Without outlier [tex]=\frac{Sum\ of\ all\ numbers}{Total\ numbers}[/tex]

                                    [tex]=\frac{15+19+22+26+29}{5}[/tex]

                                    [tex]=\frac{111}{5}[/tex]

Mean Without outlier [tex]=22.5[/tex]

So, Mean of Data with an outlier [tex];[/tex]

Mean With outlier [tex]=\frac{Sum\ of\ all\ numbers}{Total\ numbers}[/tex]

                                    [tex]=\frac{15+19+22+26+29+81}{6}[/tex]

                                     [tex]=\frac{192}{6}[/tex]

Mean With outlier [tex]=32[/tex]

So, the Mean With outlier is higher as we compare above means.

Hence, we can say that the mean with outlier will become higher.
