Which statement best describes photophosphorylation? a) It is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. b) It is the flow of hydrogen ions down a concentration gradient. c) It is the process by which light energy is captured to form simple sugars using water and carbon dioxide and to release oxygen gas as a byproduct. d) It is the addition of a phosphate group to ADP to form ATP using light energy absorbed during photosynthesis.

Answer: The correct answer is  D) It is the addition of a phosphate group to ADP to form ATP using light energy absorbed during photosynthesis.

Photophosphorylation can be defined as a process of formation of ATP ( adenpsine triphosphate) from ADP ( adenosine diphosphte) by using the energy from sunlight. In other words, it is the addition of phosphate molecule to ADP using energy from sunlight.

It takes place during the light dependent phase of photosynthesis when energy from sunlight is captured by chlorophyll that converts it into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. This is further utilized in the formation of carbohydrate ( glucose) in light independent phase.
