The most frequent criticism of Our Town is that Wilder gave only a romantic view of small town life, failing to show the unpleasant side of this lifestyle. The answer to that charge is obvious; pointing up small-town faults would have turned the play into social criticism and interjected problems with which Wilder did not want to deal. He was only concerned in this play with what is important in the life of man and what is not. He took great pains to preserve the simplicity of that theme.
