What is social penetration?
Social penetration is what shows how personal relationships evolve over time, while communication moves a little to a deeper level. It explains that the more people know each other, their communication gets better, and they are able to have a deep and intimate connection.
The theory provides clarity in communication as it relates to interpersonal connections. In other words, the principle in social penetration is that as relationships last for an increasing period of time, the people involved will gradually become more intimate with each other.
The social penetration theory as formed by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor examined how relationships grow over time and also show the connection between the strength of social relationships and the frequency and depth of interpersonal communication.
