Four laws known as the "Alien and Sedition Acts" were passed in 1798 and imposed limitations on American immigration and free speech.The Sedition Act made defamatory and malicious statements about the federal government a crime, while the Alien Enemies Act gave the president additional authority to detain non-citizens during times of war.

The Naturalization Act also increased the requirements for obtaining citizenship. The Sedition Act and the Alien Friends Act came to an end after a predetermined period of time, and the Naturalization Act was repealed in 1802.
