The term "veena" (sometimes written "vina") refers to a group of Indian chordophone instruments. Lute, zither, and arching harps are just a few examples of the many diverse kinds of antique musical instruments that are still played today. Numerous regional designs go under different names, such as "Rudra veena," "Saraswati veena," "Vichitra veena," and others.
The South Indian veena, which resembles a lute, is used in Carnatic classical music. It is a long-necked pear-shaped lute, but instead of the lower gourd found on the North Indian version of the instrument, it has a pear-shaped wooden piece in its place.
It features the same 24 frets, four melody strings, and three drone strings, but is played similarly. It continues to play a significant and favored role in traditional Carnatic music.
