Here are a few examples of reaction formation.
A man who is uneasy with his masculinity may display excessive aggression. Or a woman who struggles with substance abuse may praise the benefits of abstinence.
Someone values romantic love very highly and desires love more than anything else, but they worry that they will never find a romantic partner. Therefore, they mock the loving actions they observe in others, lament the idea of "settling down," and disparage acts of love as "mushy" or "gross."
A person finds it difficult to manage their rage, therefore they make an effort to be kind and helpful to others even though they don't feel like it.
