Relieves hypoxia. Squatting is a spontaneous compensatory mechanism used by older children with Tetralogy of Fallot to alleviate hypoxic spells. Squatting and its variants increase systemic resistance while decreasing venous return to the heart from the inferior vena cava. Squatting does not reduce chest pain, control dizziness, or improve headaches.
What Is Tetralogy of Fallot?
Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital cardiac abnormality that causes inadequate blood flow to the lungs as a result of four issues:
- A hole between the two bottom pumping chambers of the heart is known as a ventricular septal defect (VSD) (ventricles)
- Narrowing of the arteries feeding the lungs is known as pulmonary stenosis.
- The primary artery that carries oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, the aorta, often splits from the left ventricle. Both "overlap" the VSD and are situated above the ventricles in TOF.
- Right ventricular hypertrophy is the thickening of the right pumping chamber's walls (ventricle)
