Situated in neck, thyroid gland is an endocrine gland. This indicates that it produces hormones which are secreted in blood and regulate different functions in body. The thyroid hormone is responsible for growth and development of body along with metabolic rate.
The thyroid gland secretes three hormones namely T3, T4 and calcitonin. T3 refers to hormone Triiodothyronine and T4 refers to Tetraiodothyronine. T3 and T4 hormones are responsible for heart beat rate and calcitonin is responsible for regulation of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. T3 and T4 is also associated with weight gain and weight loss. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism is the most common disorder associated with thyroid.
