If a nurse notes that a 6-year-old child does not recognize that objects still exist when the objects are outside of the visual field, she should approach a healthcare provider to check on the child's cognitive development.
According to Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, children go through four different stages of development.
1) Sensorimotor stages (Birth to age of 2 years)
2) Pre-operational stages (Age 2 - 7 years)
3) Concrete operational stages (Age 7-11 years)
4) Formal operational stages (Age 12 and above)
During earlier stages of development, a child develops through his senses and makes them more defined. He learns through sensory experiences. Here they learn that objects continue to exist even when they can't be seen. However, during the pre-operational stages of development, he has already learned that things do exist even when outside of the visual field.
Therefore, if a 6-years old does not recognize the things that exist outside the visual field, one should ask for help from a healthcare provider.
