The purpose of this law was to consolidate Bantu education, the education of blacks, and to enable uniform enforcement of discriminatory educational practices throughout South Africa, this is how Bantu law come into existence.

The Bantu Education Act, 1953 (Act No. 47 of 1953, later renamed the Black Education Act, 1953) was a South African segregation law that incorporated some aspects of the apartheid system into Bantu law. Its main provision mandated racially segregated educational institutions.

Under this act, the Department of Indigenous Peoples, headed by Hendrik Verwoerd, is responsible for the education of blacks in South Africa. In 1958 the Bantu Education Authority was established. By Bantu law, black children were required to attend public schools.
