Factors responsible for environmental improvements in eastern Europe during the 1990s included European Union Membership, industrial closures, international investment, the end of collectives, the end of the Soviet Union.
Eastern Europe fell below the influence of the Soviet Union, and therefore the region was separated from the West. Once the land folded in 1991, all the Soviet Republics bordering Eastern Europe declared independence from Russia and united with the remainder of Europe.
On 3 October 1990, the uniting of East and West Germany brought European country into the Community while not increasing the quantity of member states. The Community later became the member of European Union in 1993 by virtue of the Maastrich Treaty,and established standards for brand new entrants thus their quality might be judged.
