Background information: Herodotus was a Greek historian, and completed his work, The Histories, in 440 BCE. The author of this document was Herodotus. It was written in the 430 BCE. This particular work of Herodotus is considered the founding work of history in Western literature.
The History by Herodotus serves as a record of the ancient politics, traditions, geography and clashes of various cultures that were known in Greece, Northern Africa and Western Asia at that time. Although we cannot term it as the most impartial record, yet it is one of the West's most important sources regarding these affairs.
