The explorations of Marquette and Jolliet made the way for further French explorations of the region. This included the expedition of Robert Sieur de la Salle who laid a claim on the river as well as the land it drained for France.
A Jesuit missionary, Father Jacques Marquette and a fur trader, Louis Joliet they took expeditions to explore North America's unexplored territory from the region of the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, for the colonial power of France. They together also discovered the Mississippi river.
