A car travels straight for 20 miles on a road that is 30° north of east. What is the east component of the car’s displacement to the nearest tenth of a mile?

Respuesta :

so basically when u draw u realise u have the hypotenuse as 20 and an angle of 30 degrees. to get the horizontal component u simply take cos30 =x/20
so x = 20*cos30 which is 17.3 miles.

Lets illustrate the movement of the car, which travels 20 miles (hypotenuse) at an angle of 30° . Now we need to find the value of x and it can be found by using below formula,

Cosine = Base / Hypotenuse

cos(30) =x / 20

x = 20 * cos30

x = 17.3 miles

What is cosine or (cos) ?

“ The ratio of the length of the side adjacent to the angle to the length of the hypotenuse. “ In a right triangle, the cosine of an angle is the length of the adjacent side (A) divided by the length of the hypotenuse (H).
