Castro shared good relations with US Cold War rival, the Soviet Union since the beginning of his tenure as head of the government in Cuba; he left the Soviet Union use the island as a military basis while the fear of attack increased in the U.S. Castro also declared he would assassinate Eisenhower and destroy the U.S. after the Americans had tried to kill Castro several times.
