The Great Depression was a time when America suffered a huge financial blow that affected every segment of society. It lasted from 1929 - 1933. In 1938, Dorathy West wrote "Amateur Night in Harlem." The world we get a glimpse of from her writing is;
- A racially divided world where whites and blacks disliked each other.
- The mood of the crowd is suddenly changed from joy to sadness when a white man is allowed to perform a song that shows that the darkies worked while the white man played.
When he sang this song, he reminded the black Americans in the crowd of their positions as slaves. This caused anger, and sadness that they left the theatre feeling bad about themselves.
This shows that the world of that time was marked by prejudice and racism.
