Cellular respiration is the process by which cells of the body produce energy from the breakdown of food molecules using oxygen.

The steps in cellular respiration are as follows:

  • Glucose is broken down in the glycolytic cycle to produce 2 molecules of pyruvate and two net ATP molecules
  • The two pyruvate molecules are converted to two molecules of acetylCoA
  • Each of the two molecules of acectylCoA enters the citric acid cycle and is used to produce the reducing equivalents NADH and FADH with a net production of 2 ATP molecules.
  • The reducing equivalents finally transfer their electrons to oxygen with subsequent production of ATP
  • Overall, 32 ATP molecules are produced from one molecule of glucose.
