12. Diamond and graphite are both made out of pure carbon that is to say, they have
identical compositions. What internal difference makes diamond the hardest mineral
and graphite one of the softest? What determines how hard a mineral is?
The molecular structure of the materials is what makes the difference. The Carbon atoms are in a different structure in diamond than in the graphite making one much harder than the other.
