It is the Panama Canal Zone. The U.S. got this zone by throwing in their weight for the Panamanian independence. The Panama Canal made passage to Europe faster and easier. It also made travel by boat from the western U.S. to the eastern U.S. easier and faster. I really hope this helps you!
