Does the value of the item taken by a shoplifter have any bearing on whether or not a theft occurred ? Should the punishment given to a shoplifter depend upon the price of the article or she stole? Why ?

The more valuable the more time or the more extreme the punishment. Either way stealing is bad . If someone robs a bank you wouldn’t give them the same jail time as a shoplifter who stole clothes or shoes because the bank has more value.
