I most recently read Call of the Wild by Jack London. One of the major conflicts of the story was Buck the dog had an internal struggle of whether to stay domesticated or listen to is wild self. A group of humans are trying to force him to drag their sleigh across some thin ice, in the end, he listens to himself and refuses to move, a man cuts him loose from his reigns, and Buck becomes very loyal to the man. I think the conflict does happen in real life, not only in dogs but also in people struggling to listen to their gut or what the people around them are telling them.
