Should juveniles be tried and treated as adults?
The amended Act distinguishes children in the age group 16-18 as a category that can be tried as adults if they are alleged to have committed a heinous offense — one that attracts a minimum punishment of seven years. The Act does not, however, make it mandatory for all children in this age group to be tried as adults.
What effects are there from trying juveniles in adult courts?
There are many effects that being tried as an adult can have on a juvenile. Psychological effects can be anything from juveniles losing faith in the justice system to experiencing trauma going through adult court and being confined in adult prisons, and that trauma can cause various emotional disorders.
