Foreign policy is the relationship of any country with other countries around the globe.

  • The congress decided to make major changes in the foreign policy of America. They tailored it according to the Articles of Confederation. This was followed between 1776 to 1789.
  • In 1783, the Paris treaty was signed as a result of which America could spread its colony to the Mississippi River.
  • With the French Revolution on its way, the United States decided to play a neutral role regardless of being an old ally of the French.
  • Hence in 1795, a peace treaty between Britain and America was signed to prevent any unforeseeable war. The Jeffersonian's opposed this policy of neutral character.
  • As a result of which after a year or so the French started seizing American ships and implemented war on the United States.
  • To get American's out of this situation, Adam presented a plan which got approved by the Congress in 1800 hence the American Navy was organized accordingly.
  • Later, President Jefferson got elected and became the driving force to lead the Empire of Liberty. He completely changed the foreign policy. He made many efforts of expansion to the Mississippi River and also signed the Embargo Act of 1807.

  • In 1812, America entirely changed its diplomatic role and started a war with Britain. This war was quite ill planned hence another Act of Ghent was signed between the two powers to promote peace.

Now, with the advent of internal conflicts between Federalists and Republican Democrats, America began to isolate itself in diplomatic matters, while promoting expansionist policies through the doctrine of Manifest Destiny.
