New territories demanded a longer and more expensive defensive line and more forts. To pay the debts of the war and cover the costs of increased defense expenditures, the crown also increased taxes. British troops occupied without permission farms and houses of colonists. Colonists were often jailed without a due process, without the right to a trial by a jury. All those facts caused deep disatisfaction among colonists and contributed to anti-royalist feelings in the 1760s and 1770s.
