Canada has been a member of the World Trade Organization since 1 January 1995.
It has free trade with the United States (since 1989) and since 1994 it has been included in the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), with the US and Mexico.
This facilitated export expansion and favorable import of the latest technologies from the US.
Foreign trade accounts for almost 65% of GDP; the main driver of development is the export of goods and services, so the current balance is stable.
Most of the trade between these two states is located around Great Lakes and the river St. Lawrence, which are actually borders.
