In act 4, John says, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!" What do you think he means by this? Would it mean the same thing today as it did at the time of this play? Using evidence from the text to support your answer, explain why or why not.

He refuses to sign the confession because, in the end, his name is the only truth he has left. He was not faithful to his wife and has worked hard to make amends. After all the lies and deceit flying around Salem, John's name is all he has left of his self-worth. I am not entirely sure but this is the best answer I can give! hope this helps! ^^
