John Dean was a key figure in the Watergate scandal. Counsel to President Richard Nixon from 1970 to 1973, Dean attempted to cover up for the burglary at the Democratic National Council building. He destroyed evidence that would have been useful to investigators. Dean was linked to this scandal when Sam Ervin testified before the Judicial committee that he had given FBI reports to Dean. Finally, Dean became a witness for the prosecution when he sensed that he was going to be the scapegoat in the Watergate scandal. This earned him a reduced sentence.
John Erlichman, Counsel to Nixon on Domestic affairs formed "The Plumbers", a group that was key in the Watergate scandal. He prevented important information about the scandal from getting out to the public and also intentionally tried to prevent the confirmation of L. Patrick Gray as the new FBI Director. He was sentenced to prison for obstruction of justice, conspiracy, amongst other charges.
