A people that lived along the banks of the Niger River. By 900, they grew prosperous by trading with Islamic lands. They traded gold, copper and African slaves. Around 1000 AD the King converted to Islam and the empire continued to be Islamic for several hundred years. The merchants and people in the cities were typically Islamic while the people in the countryside continued worshiping their traditional gods.
