Cindy and Giovanni plan to make spaghetti sauce. Cindy needs 4 3/4 pounds of tomatoes for her recipe. Giovanni needs 5 3/4 pounds of tomatoes for his sauce. If they make both recipes, how many pounds of tomatoes do they need?

(4 3/4) + (5 3/4) = (4 + 5) + (3/4 + 3/4)

= 9 + 2×(3/4)

= 9 + 3/2

= 10 1/2 . . . . pounds of tomatoes
