As a child, Louis Braille learned that the French military was using a system of raised dots
and dashes in order to send messages at night. These cryptographic messages were read
using the fingertips rather than using the eyes. The "night writing" engendered a great
deal of intrigue in Braille, who had lost his sight after an accident in his early childhood.
He adapted the code to make it more user-friendly and, in 1829, published a book about
his method. Though other tactile reading and writing systems had been largely
unsuccessful, Braille's raised dot system was a veritable breakthrough. Today, Braille's
system is still used by blind and visually impaired people.
