Evaluate: Continental drift is the theory that all of the continents were once joined together in a landmass called Pangaea. The theory would suggest that over millions of years, the landmass broke apart and separated into the continents we have today. Plate tectonics is the theory that earth's outer shell is made up of large plates that move and interact with each other. There is some evidence that supports the theory of continental drift. By looking at a map, you can see that the coastlines of Africa and South America fit together like puzzle pieces. Another piece of evidence that suggests continental drift really did happen is the distribution of certain fossils. There are animal and plant fossils that have been found on certain continents where those plants and animals are not native to that continent. This could mean that at one point in time, the animals were able to roam freely back and forth between an area that is now separated by an ocean.
