Concerned by the fact that women tend to receive lower Social Security benefits in part because they engage in a disproportionate amount of unpaid care work, Professors Madonna Harrington Meyer and Pamela Herd proposed that parents caring for children have the option of receiving "care credit" on their Social Security earnings records in the amount of one-half of the median wage for up to five years for caring for one child and up to nine years for caring for more than one child. Is Madonna Harrington Meyer & Pamela Herd, Market Friendly or Family Friendly? Would you support such a care credit? Should a similar credit be extended to those who provide unpaid care for aging relatives?
